This young Red-bellied Woodpecker is eating its first strawberry: it also likes slices of oranges and grapes.
The Red-bellied Woodpeckers tongue is about 2 inches long; the tip of the tongue is barbed and the spit is sticky which helps it’s to get prey that are deep in the crevices of bark, etc. The photo here were taken in June. The last photo is a much younger Red-bellied Woodpecker. Red-bellied woodpecker, male is getting ready to fly off with his bite of food to hide somewhere. Photos taken in May 2017 Young one is calling for its mom. Mom shows up, and starts feeding her daughter. All is well now with young one, it has a full belly..
