Here is one of the ways the birds keeps warm in the winter months.
The bird’s body heat will help to warm the air and trap it in between its feathers, making layers of air pockets. When it is cold the birds looks like they have put on weight, but it is just their fluffy feathers that makes them look larger. The bird here is a Dark-eyed Junco, staying warm.

The Dark-eyed Juncos are our snow birds, ha-ha. They show up in the winter months here in KY., and will head northward in the spring time to their breeding grounds.
The first ones to show up will be higher up on their social ladder; late ones will be at the end of the social ladder. Being early does pay off at times, grin. The Dark-eyed Juncos are medium-sized sparrows. |
