We need vultures to help keep our land clean of dead animals. If we didn’t have vultures more than likely the dead animals would be on the ground longer and that would create an increase in insects. This in turn would cause diseases to spread to other animals and also to people.
The vultures eye sight isn’t as strong as other raptors that hunt, but they are great at spotting carcasses. Turkey vultures have a great sense of smell, but the black vultures sense of smell isn’t that good. A vulture can eat up to two pounds or more of meat within about a minute or so. Their hooked bills help in tearing up the meat. They may mate for life. Both parents will help to take care of their young ones. They are very social birds within the group of vultures that they hang out with. The first photo is of a Black Vulture. The second photo is of a Turkey Vulture.
