The Downy Woodpeckers like to hang out with Chickadees, and Nuthatches in the winter months. Chickadees most of the time are the ones that warns the other birds that a predator is in the area. The smallest woodpecker that is in North America is the downy woodpecker. Its name comes from the downy white feathers.
Their bill is about half the size of the hairy woodpeckers. Also, on the downy woodpecker’s white outer tail feathers they will have a few black bars. Hairy woodpecker outer tail feathers are all white. Downy woodpeckers are 6” and Hairy woodpeckers are 9 “in size. The males have red on nape, the females will have no red on their nape. The Cardinal was there first, then the Woodpecker flew down to join him. Northern Cardinal & Hairy Woodpecker, males. Miss Hairy is watching Mr. Blue and Mr. Starling having a stare down as to who gets to stay and who has to fly off. Mr. Jay says to Mr Starling; “ I was here first, you need to fly off.” Mr. Jay looks at me and says; “Tell Mr. Starling that he is in my woods.” Mr. Starling did fly off , and haven’t been seen since that day he met Mr. Jay. Hairy Woodpecker, female. Blue Jay, & European Starling, winter. We see Hairy Woodpeckers more often in the winter months when they come in closer to our area for suet and sunflower seeds. The first two photos are female woodpeckers. The other two are male woodpeckers.
One of the places downy woodpeckers will use at night are trees that has cavities that they can go inside of. Their feathers will trap air pockets around their bodies to help them stay warm.
Hairy Woodpecker, female is on the left side. On the right side is a Downy Woodpecker, male. The Hairy Woodpecker is 9" and has a larger bill then the Downy. The Downy Woodpecker is 6" and has black & white markings on the sides of its tail.
This Red-bellied Woodpecker, male really likes slices of oranges. He knows all the tricks to get the pulp out of the orange.
